Description: Miami second baseman Rafael Furcal (hamstring) will start his minor league rehab assignment on Monday, according to Joe Frisaro of mlb.com. The Marlins anticipate using all 21 days for Furcal's assignment.
Insight: Furcal is one of the rare position players who underwent Tommy John surgery. He missed all of 2013 following the procedure and hasn't been a worthwhile fantasy option since he got off to a hot start in the first two months of 2012. His hamstring injury and advanced age mean he won't be looking to run much when he does make his 2014 debut.

Description: Marlins infielder Rafael Furcal should play a minor league game Monday after missing a week due to a hamstring injury.
Insight: Furcal is expected to start at second base. He missed all of 2013 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. In his most recent season, Furcal batted .264 with five homers, 49 RBI, 69 runs and 12 steals in 121 games.

12/6/2013 9:15:00 PM
Description: The Marlins have signed Rafael Furcal to a one-year contract.
Insight: Furcal is expected to start at second base. He missed all of 2013 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. In his most recent season, Furcal batted .264 with five homers, 49 RBI, 69 runs and 12 steals in 121 games.

3/7/2013 10:45:00 AM
Description: Jenifer Langosch from MLB.com is reporting that Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.
Insight: Barring some kind of medical miracle, we won't see Furcal on the field this season. With Furcal sidelined, Pete Kozma (.333, 2 HR, 14 RBI) and Ronny Cedeno (.259, 4 HR, 22 RBI) will platoon at shortstop for St. Louis. Neither is fantasy-worthy.

Description: Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal's recovery from an elbow injury isn't going as quickly as expected and it's beginning to look less and less likely that he'll be ready for Opening Day. SOURCE: St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Insight: Same story, different year. Furcal has never been a quick healer, which is probably why he's only played 100 games once in his previous three seasons. Even when he's healthy, Furcal (.264, 5 HR, 49 RBI, 12 SB in 2012) is a late-round flyer at best.

Description: St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal continues to be bothered by right elbow pain when he throws the ball. The team suggested that the switch-hitter only batted right-handed to limit the stress caused on his elbow. SOURCE: St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Insight: Furcal missed the final two months of last season with a torn ulnar collateral ligament but said the ligament has not caused him any pain. The soreness is being caused by a bone spur in his elbow. Furcal and the Cardinals continue to say that the season opener is not a question.

2/15/2013 11:06:00 AM
Description: St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal's injured right elbow is healed and he's been given no limitations in spring training, according to the Cardinals' website.
Insight: Furcal missed the final month of last season with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He batted .264 with 69 runs, 5 HR, 49 RBI and 12 SB in 121 games last season and is still the Cardinals' best shortstop option.

11/20/2012 8:06:00 PM
Description: St. Louis GM John Mozeliak says that Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal's injured right elbow is now completely healed.
Insight: An MRI on Monday confirmed this. Furcal missed the final month of the season with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He'll have a chance to compete for the team's starting shortstop job in spring training.

9/24/2012 10:26:00 PM
Description: The Cardinals have officially ruled shortstop Rafael Furcal out for the season. Furcal has been out since the end of August because of an elbow injury.
Insight: St. Louis was holding out hope that Furcal (.264, 5 HR, 49 RBI) would be able to return late in the season or in the playoffs but it was always a bit of a long shot. He should be fine for the start of spring training next season.

9/3/2012 7:30:00 PM
Description: St. Louis shortstop Rafael Furcal will undergo plasma therapy on his ailing elbow on Tuesday.
Insight: Furcal (.264, 5 HR, 49 RBI) had been set to have season-ending Tommy John surgery but that procedure appears to be off the table now that tests have shown that Furcal's UCL isn't actually torn. It's a long shot, but Furcal could still be back before the end of the year.

9/1/2012 4:57:00 PM
Description: Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal will not undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery so he might be able to return this season, according to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com.
Insight: Furcal will try to rehab and return in 4-6 weeks. However, there's almost no chance he'll play in another regular season game, so fantasy owners can cut him loose.

8/31/2012 5:25:00 PM
Description: Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal has been diagnosed with a torn UCL in his right elbow. He's out for the season, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Insight: The team has yet to make a decision on whether or not Furcal will undergo Tommy John surgery.

Cold8/5/2012 7:07:00 PM
Description: Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal isn't in the starting lineup for Sunday night's game versus the Brewers.
Insight: He's hitless since his return from a sore back on Friday and is now just 1-for-18 over his last four games (.267, 5 HR, 42 RBI).

8/3/2012 5:53:00 PM
Description: St. Louis shortstop Rafael Furcal is back in the lineup Friday after missing five games in a row with a stiff back.
Insight: Furcal (.272, 5 HR, 42 RBI) is hitting .306 with three RBI in 36 at bats against the Brewers this season.

8/3/2012 12:36:00 PM
Description: St. Louis shortstop Rafael Furcal is questionable for Friday's game against Milwaukee with tightness in the lower back.
Insight: He remains day-to-day despite missing the team's last five games (.272, 60 runs, 5 HRs, 42 RBIs).

8/1/2012 7:18:00 PM
Description: St. Louis shortstop Rafael Furcal is still out with a sore back. He hasn't appeared in a game for the Cardinals since Friday.
Insight: He remains day-to-day, though at this point a DL stint is beginning to look like a real possibility for Furcal (.272, 5 HRs, 42 RBIs).

7/29/2012 12:34:00 PM
Description: St. Louis shortstop Rafael Furcal is missing Sunday's game against Chicago because of lingering shin and back pain.
Insight: Neither injury appears to be too serious so Furcal (.272, 5 HRs, 42 RBIs) should be fine to return to the lineup after the Cardinals off-day on Monday.

7/28/2012 12:50:00 PM
Description: Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against Chicago. No injury, just a day of rest for the 34-year-old.
Insight: Furcal reached .370 on May 16, but is now batting .272. Needless to say, he needs to start hitting again to be a useful fantasy asset.

7/26/2012 10:26:00 AM
Description: Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal is batting .219 (51-for-233) in his last 58 games, but he does have 13 hits in 44 at-bats in the second half and a favorable matchup Thursday against Dodgers starter Chris Capuano.
Insight: Furcal reached .370 on May 16 and then went into a dramatic tailspin, but he has slowly been getting his average back up. Plus, he is 8-for-22 (.364) in his career against Capuano.
